The Eden Foods Story
Year Founded: 1968
Products: Organic beans canned and dry, organic condiments and sweeteners, organic chili, organic sauces and butters, organic soy, organic fruit juices, traditional Japanese foods, organic oils and vinegars, organic pasta, organic rice and beans, sea vegetables, organic spices and herbs, organic supplements and concentrates, organic teas, organic tomatoes, organic sauerkraut, organic dried fruits and nuts, and organic beans.
Where to Buy: Natural food stores, co-ops, supermarkets nation-wide—and on the web.
The oldest natural and organic food company in North America, Eden Foods was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in the late 1960s and has been owned and operated independently for more than four decades. It started as a co-op and has evolved into a natural food store offering whole grains, beans, soy foods, cereals, vegetable oils, seed oils, and seed and nut butters. These days, it also offers a cafeteria, bakery, and a book section. But it still buys most of its food from local farmers, except (of course) for the extra virgin olive oil (from Spain), high-altitude white and red quinoa (from the Andes Mountains), chamomile (from Egypt), and traditional Japanese foods from the Far East.
In 1972, Eden established relationships with Japanese traditional food makers and began to import sea vegetables, teas, miso, shoyu, umeboshi plums, kuzu root stach, rice vinegar, rice bran pickles, and mirin to stock its very first warehouse.
Eden Foods do not carry the USDA Organic seal, but maintain that their products meet or exceed all USDA organic standards. The Cornucopia Institute says, “Based on our follow-up research, we have no reason to question their claim that all soybeans used in their EdenSoy products come from American farmers with whom they have long-term and stable relationships.” Please note that Eden Foods does sell four products containing non-US-grown soybeans: natto miso, freeze-dried tofu, tekka tofu, tekka sauce, and ponzu sauce.
The company goals are to: “provide the highest quality, life-supporting food and accurate information about them, their uses, and benefits; to maintain a healthy, respectful, challenging and rewarding environment for employees; to cultivate sound relationships with other organizations and individuals who are like-minded and involved in like pursuits; to cultivate adaptability to change in economic, social, and environmental conditions, to allow Eden the opportunity to survive long-term; to have a strong, positive impact on farming practices and food-processing techniques used throughout the world; and to contribute to peaceful evolution on earth.” For more information, see the company website at www.edenfoods.com.
